It’s that time of the year again. Brand new backpacks that stay put on kids’ backs, squeaky clean shoes that fit, long sharpened pencils that write, and loads of enthusiasm. Yes, we’re talking about getting ready to go back to school.
Parents, listen up. If you have a kid in middle school or high school, then this will interest you. As your child moves from elementary to middle school, you can expect a lot more being packed into the school curriculum. As they get ready for more challenging topics, there is a good chance that your child will be introduced to concepts that will need more hands-on learning. Have you ever given it a thought as to how you or your child might handle animal dissections? This is part of Biology lesson plans in high schools. Think about it. Know about your state and school district’s position on offering alternatives to animal dissections. If your state allows for other options, then you are in luck.
Alternatives to animal dissections are a blessing. The thought of cutting up an animal can be extremely revolting to many. Discuss the issue with your child and see how he/she feels about it. If you sense some reluctance, approach the school to see if they can accommodate your child’s needs. Explain your child’s position and offer some alternatives. There are several options available including but not limited to software, online resources, and even apps that can teach the procedure. Consider these so that you don’t rob your child of the learning that comes with the lesson.
If you haven’t already seen what we have, then check out Frog Dissection. It’s an app that simulates the procedure of dissecting a frog, all done virtually of course. Your child can learn to dissect a frog without ever having to dirty her/his hands. We’ve now launched an update that has many new features. The updated version is now available in the iTunes store. It will make a great back-to-school download for your iPad. So, head to the apps store and see for yourself.
Have an awesome school year!
