Derek Keenan, a professional learning coach in 21st century learning and technology at Bert Church High School in Airdrie, Alberta, Canada presented Mobl21 and Punflay apps at MobiLE 2012 in Phoenix, Arizona.  The presentation titled, The Educational Implications of App Innovations, showcased how developers are beginning to make a difference in education through their products.

Below is an excerpt of Derek’s blog post:

What I truly enjoy about talking to educators about Punflay is the common perception they have of the quality of apps Punflay releases.  Frog dissection, as one of the star Punflay apps, really sets the tone for this company’s dedication to creating highly effective and detailed apps with significant value for education.

I was able to share the app Rat Dissection with the audience, and talked about not only the value of this to the classroom setting in schools that may not have access to a full science lab, but also to distance learning students, or students away from the classroom who would otherwise not have the ability to interact with a live lab.

In the presentation for Punflay I looked at Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy and the ISTE NETS for Students.  I challenged educators to put these apps to the test and see what kind of learning we could expect with them.  Some of the suggestions were quite good, including that the self-discovery in Rat Dissection as a distance learning tool might lead a student to the Analysing level in the taxonomy, not too bad for an app used independently.  In terms of ISTE standards, we can argue that the “Technology Operations and Concepts” and “Critical Thinking” sections might be the most applicable to these apps.

Hello everyone!
Another eventful year for Punflay…..2011 came and went by so quickly, but our accomplishments this past year are definitely worth more than a mention. Read on to find out what all we did last year.
As a great start to 2011, Frog Dissection was selected as the Best Science app by the reputed educational review site, IEAR. This is huge primarily because IEAR picks the best of the bunch and receiving accolades from them goes to show that Frog Dissection is a winner when it comes to science apps that schools can actually use in the classroom. And get this; many schools are using the app in their classes for instructional purposes. Besides saving a few frogs, it is simple, intuitive, and a great supplement in the lab. In a drive to do away with dissections, PeTA is offering to donate Frog Dissection to school and classrooms interested in making the switch to humane dissection alternatives.

Another educational app that has been well received by parents and educators is Word Wall HD and My Word Wall. This app is the right one for beginning readers. It helps young readers with recognition of sight words and common word family words. Word Wall was reviewed by Common Sense Media and Wired.com to be a great app for kids just starting to read.

Adding to the list of our apps are Odd 1 Out and Measurement HD, both receiving rave reviews from parents and educators. These are designed for kindergarteners who are excited about practicing their newly learned math skills.
And last but certainly not the least, is our Cell and Cell Structure, an app endorsed by Apple as new and noteworthy. Rich visuals and well-crafted content put this app in a very special category.
